Hi everyone,

Hungary’s capital is well worth a visit.

Budapest was created out of the unification of the separate historic towns of Buda, Pest and Óbuda in 1873.

Budapest is bisected by the River Danube, flowing north to south through the city centre.

The history of Budapest is not only rich but more so fascinating; its cultural heritage is ever present. The city is also known as the Queen of the Danube, and the city of Spas.

One of the reasons the Romans first colonized the area, were the thermal springs which were utilised immediately.

Newer baths were constructed during the Turkish period 1541 - 1686, and served both bathing and medicinal purposes. Some of the baths are still in use today.

The two oldest baths still open today are Kiraly Thermal Baths and Rudas Medicinal Baths you can find more information about these bath on www.spasbudapest.com/tartalom.php

Budapest has managed over several centuries to blend architectural and cultural heritage with modern day life. Historic buildings gradually get renovated and restored.

An absolute MUST is The Castle District, the River Danube embankments and the Andrássy út, a 2.5km avenue which is officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Matthias Church, the Fishermen’s Bastion, the Heroes’ Square dominated by the Millenary Monument and the Tomb of the Unknown soldier. Just in case you’ve got a bit more time on your hand, you may well take the opportunity to visit the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Arts, the City Park with the Vajahunyad Castle and its own island.

Just in case you’ll get hungry and thirsty, there are many restaurants from the traditional Goulash and the sweet Tokaji wine to Italian specialities, you take your pick.

It has to be said that over the last few decades Budapest has changed a lot however, I reckon it still is well worth spending some time there. It’s different beautiful and full of charm.

Till next time

Barbara
