Hi folks,
Back in Oz for this edition. It was my first visit to Western Australia just a couple of weeks ago.
It’s quite a long way from Sydney, you know, at the other coast, facing the Indian Ocean, 4500 kilometers or so between the two towns.
I’ve heard a lot about Perth and its location, its difference to Sydney etc, so I actually was quite exited to finally get there. It was on my travelling plans back in 1999, but I got stuck in Brisbane.
As I attended a 3 day conference, I was not expecting to be able to see too much however, let me share with you what I’ve found anyway.
Due to some major event downtown Perth, and a lack of accommodation, the event was moved to Fremantle or Freo as the locals call it.
Fremantle named after Charles Fremantle, who was the captain of HMS Challenger dropped anchor here in 1829.
Fremantle is Perth’s port, about 20 km at mouth of the Swan River. Freo ones was a city in its own right, however, Perth has grown and Fremantle today is more of a suburb of Perth.
The prime attraction of Fremantle is the “Fremantle Markets” held 3 days a week from Friday to Sunday. If you need fruit and vegetables, go and buy them late Sunday afternoon, their getting sold cheap before the markets closing time.
To find accommodation, please go www.fremantle.com
This site gives you good overview of what accommodation is available in Freo.
The event we were attending was held at the Esplanade Hotel in the City centre.
I prefer to stay at Bed and Breakfast places, certainly here in Australia; I have had so many good experiences over the year. I have come to the conclusion, that they often are very good value for money. We booked ourselves into the Fothergill’s of Fremantle book able via http://babs.com.au/fothergills/
Oh something I should have told you earlier, www.babs.com.au is a very good site to find and book Bed and Breakfast places all over Australia. Give it a go.
I’ve heard a bit about Western Australians being slower and more relaxed as us Sydneysiders, and yes, this is true.
Seven cars at one time seems to be rush hour, and it actually can be quite dangerous, since you do not expect any cars at all, so be careful ;-))!
Getting around Fremantle is real easy; everything is only about a 20 minutes walk away. You can book yourself onto a tram tour, or there is the cat bus that takes you around as well.
Just pick up a city map at the airport or at the tourism information centre near town hall enjoy the ride.
Places to eat, no problem at all, there are any number of restaurants in the city centre, so a great choice of anything from Indian to Seafood to Pizza, the choice is yours.
Have fun and enjoy WA!
Cheers
Barbara
