Hi everyone,
On another topic entirely.
I don’t think there’s any doubt that India has had an edge on a number of things such as health, nutrition and more over the centuries.
While in Switzerland in September this year, I visited a very good friend of mine just outside Basel in Germany.
She lives very close to the Black Forest, which according to Rashid is NOT as black as he’d imagined it as a child.
but hey, who says that the imagination of a child is always compatible with reality?
In this area around Freiburg im Breisgau, which is a very nice old South German town, there are many thermal bath houses. It has, for a long time been very popular for all sorts of pains and aches.
So Doris invited me along for an Ayurveda massage, including an hour of yoga. Since I’m very interested in all sorts of things this was just a great day out as far as I was concerned.
The experience was fantastic. I was a bit sore for the next few days, but it felt as if something weighing me down in my body has been taken off me.
Just do give you a bit more of an insight of what this exotic massage is all about, and by the way, there is a lot more to ayurveda than just a massage. I’d consider it more as a way of leading a healthy balanced life, since there is a whole nutritional regime attached too.
You get put onto a wooden table, and massaged with oils that contain a great number of herbs and other medicines. Don’t expect it to be an aroma therapy session. The ayurvedic oils are not meant to be pleasantly aromatic, but healing and there in often lies the difference.
So get used to it and as I said before, it certainly did the trick for me.
I did have a great experience in Southern Germany, however the place to go, at the end of the day, really would be India. This is where the roots and the age old knowledge belongs.
Auyrvedic spas and even hospitals can be found all over India, however the southern states or Kerala and Tamil Nadu have a particularly wide range of ayurvedic spas.
These spas are great however, you might suffer from something a bit more serious and you think you might benefit from a supervised course of alternative treatment, you’ve got the option of a full-scale ayourvedic hospital or chikitsalaqyam in Sanskrit.
I’m sure by googling you’ll find something for your taste and needs.
Here are some links and names anyway just so that you can get yourself started.
If you can’t make it to the Subcontinent, find out whom in your area offers these treatments, and just go out and experience, who knows, you might like it too.
Enjoy a very happy body, and till next time
Barbara
