A taste of the eternal City
November 28th, 2006 by Barbara
Hi everybody,
On a very different topic today and I might start writing more about food and travel in the future.
However I give this one a try and see how I go, and how you enjoy it.
Experiencing Rome for most of us is through the lens of old buildings, ancient culture, and religion. Nothing wrong with this approach, millions of people have done it and would do it again any time.
But let’s move away from the traditional ways of visiting and exploring the eternal city. Well one does get hungry when exploring and visiting so why shouldn’t I talk about food?
You may know or may not know, there are some very “interesting” culinary specialities to Rome.
Here they are;
Globe artichokes, Rome’s own, are available from late February till mid April, a good way of preparing them, if you like artichokes that is, simmer in olive oil with mint and parsley - this is absolutely divine.
Since we’re talking Italy, how could possibly NOT talk about pasta. Yes, here are just a few ideas.
Egg-decked carbonara, cacao et pepe with a sting of cheese and pepper or amatriciana a tomato and onion sauce and the list goes on and on.
The Roman’s taste for meet comes in all shapes, which I must admit does not always match mine. I therefore suggest you’d find out for yourself and get yourself to the eternal city.
Just something food related that needs a mention, probably the best market for fresh food is the Campo dei Fiori, it offers an enticing display of food, and is right in the city’s heart. An antique market place facing the Palazzo Farnese. The markets are held every day, except Sunday until 1.30 pm.
Another market, which is similarly charming, but less expensive and more rustic, is the market in Testaccio.
So I hope you can understand that there is a lot to see and eat in Rome and that you may just want to extend your stay for culinary reasons.
Till next time and buon apetito Roma!
Barbara
